The Government has officially launched dialysis services at the Baa Dharavandhoo Health Centre, marking another step in expanding specialised healthcare across the atolls.
The service was inaugurated at a special ceremony by Minister of Health Abdullah Nazim. The centre now houses a two-bed dialysis unit staffed by an internal medicine specialist.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised expanding access to critical treatments in regional communities, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for essential care.
With the addition of Dharavandhoo, dialysis services are now available in multiple atolls, with Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, and Faafu Atolls next in line for rollout.
Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for patients with kidney failure, requiring sessions of around four hours, two to three times a week, to cleanse the blood.
The government has also pledged wider reforms to strengthen the health system, including upgrading facilities, expanding services, and revising relevant laws and regulations to ensure long-term sustainability.
