Electricity services in Malé and Hulhumalé have returned to normal after work at the Hulhumalé power plant was completed earlier than scheduled.

The State Electric Company (STELCO) explained that the operation required switching off all generators at the 50 MW power plant in Hulhumalé. During this period, a load shedding system was introduced to manage the supply of electricity to Malé city and Hulhumalé. The company stated that the measure was necessary to reduce the rate of controlled electricity consumption during those hours.

Following the completion of the work, STELCO confirmed that electricity has now been fully restored to all areas of Malé city and Hulhumalé, and load shedding has been discontinued. The company also expressed appreciation to the public for their cooperation and support during the interruption.

STELCO noted that arrangements were made to ensure that essential services, including Government institutions and public service facilities, did not face interruptions even while the generators were offline.

The Hulhumalé power plant, launched in 2019, consists of six generators with a combined capacity of 50 MW. According to STELCO, demand for electricity in Malé and Hulhumalé continues to rise, creating the need for additional facilities to maintain sustainable supply.

In this context, the company stated that the planned construction of a new power plant at Thilafushi, alongside the Thilamalé Bridge project, would provide a long-term solution to the growing demand for electricity in the region.
