President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of 500 housing units in Hanimaadhoo will be contracted next month.
Speaking to Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo residents during his visit to Atoll, the President emphasised Hanimaadhoo’s importance in the development of the entire Maldives, noting its central role in the Government’s Sustainable Development Policy. He highlighted that several major projects have been planned for the island in line with this vision.
In this regard, the President reiterated his commitment to resolving the crisis in Hanimaadhoo. The 500-unit housing project, to be carried out by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), will be launched early next month. He explained that construction would be undertaken in two parts: the building of new housing blocks, and the development of three-room apartments on residents’ existing plots where homes have not yet been built.
The President explained that the Government has taken steps to enhance educational facilities on the island. The project to expand Hanimaadhoo School, handed over to Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, will ensure that students access to quality education. The school expansion project comprises 8 classrooms, a staff room, laboratories and other facilities. He added that the old building currently occupied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) would be vacated and repurposed for higher education.
In terms of healthcare, the President pledged that services would be significantly improved with the completion of a 30-bed hospital. By the end of the year, dialysis services will be introduced, alongside the appointment of a paediatrician and a specialist in women’s health at the Hanimaadhoo Health Centre.
Further development plans include new sports facilities such as a fitness and recreation centre and a volleyball court, in addition to a major road construction project scheduled to be completed by 2027.
President Dr Muizzu stressed that these projects, which also include the relocation of Hirimaradhoo residents and the resumption of a previously stalled development scheme, would bring long-term benefits to all the residents.
He assured residents that the development of Hanimaadhoo would continue to reflect the aspirations and priorities of its people.
