The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a yellow alert for Addu City, in effect from 7.45 a.m. to 10.45 a.m. Forecasters expect heavy rainfall and thunder during this period.
Officials explained that the alert is linked to weather conditions associated with the southwest monsoon. Yesterday marked the start of the eleventh nakaiy of the season, known locally as Fura.
Those familiar with traditional weather patterns observed that rainfall during this stage of the monsoon often occurs intermittently. With the arrival of Fura, the peak phase of the season is now drawing to a close.
Meteorologists also noted that as the season progresses, winds are expected to shift and blow mainly from the north-west.
