STELCO is advancing forward with plans to implement a time-based tariff system using peak and off-peak rates, enabled by smart meters, solar energy systems, and battery energy storage solutions. This initiative seeks to optimise energy usage and promote sustainable practices across the Maldives.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru, STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy highlighted Rakeedhoo’s success as a step forward in the Maldives’ energy transition, attributing the achievement to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership in advancing renewable energy initiatives.

Vaavu Rakeedhoo, chosen as a model island for renewable energy innovations, has achieved a significant milestone, now running diesel generators for only two hours daily. The majority of its electricity needs are met through a hybrid PV-BESS-DG (Photovoltaic-Battery Energy Storage System-Diesel Generator) setup. This system effectively integrates solar power and battery storage, drastically reducing diesel dependency, cutting carbon emissions, and enhancing energy efficiency.

Rakeedhoo’s transformation supports the national goal of generating 33 per cent of energy from renewable sources. The island serves as a live demonstration of sustainable energy solutions, showcasing their feasibility and potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while advancing the Maldives’ sustainability agenda.

By selecting Rakeedhoo as a demonstration site, STELCO aims to attract investors and further position the Maldives as a leader in renewable energy adoption.

STELCO’s initiative is designed not only to promote eco-friendly energy practices but also to attract potential investors by presenting a practical example of advanced energy systems in action. This approach aligns with the Maldives’ broader goals of sustainability and energy efficiency.
