State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced plans to transition 50% of the power supply on small islands in the Maldives to solar energy within the next five years. Managing Director Hussain Fahmy revealed the initiative during an appearance on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, emphasising the company’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.

According to Fahmy, the initiative aims to deliver at least 12 hours of solar-powered electricity daily to all islands by the end of the current government’s term. This will be achieved through the integration of solar energy systems and battery storage, significantly reducing reliance on diesel generators and cutting emissions.

“In the next five years, we are undertaking a project to achieve carbon neutrality by using solar and battery systems to provide at least 12 hours of power daily on all small islands,” Fahmy stated.

Fahmy highlighted the success of solar integration in Vaavu Rakeedhoo, where diesel engines are now switched off for up to 22 hours a day due to solar energy adoption. Similar projects are planned for other islands in the atoll, with the exception of Thinadhoo. Negotiations are currently underway with banks to secure funding for these initiatives.

This project forms part of the Maldives’ broader strategy to combat climate change and transition to renewable energy sources. If successful, it could mark a significant milestone in the nation’s sustainability efforts and demonstrate the viability of solar energy in small island contexts.
