Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has started procuring fish from Fuvahmulah City Port.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, during a visit to Fuvahmulah City, said that purchases from the port would begin before the end of August. On Saturday, MIFCO’s vessel Randhi 19 arrived at the port and arrangements were made to commence procurement. The vessel has the capacity to store 36 metric tonnes of fish.
Fuvahmulah is regarded as a productive fishing ground for yellowfin tuna, and the company noted that the new operation is expected to increase the supply of fish to MIFCO. The Randhi 19 will remain stationed at the port to ensure local fishermen have easier access to the company’s services.
In addition to the new procurement arrangements, MIFCO has begun constructing a fish processing facility in Fuvahmulah City. The facility, which is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, will produce safely processed and packaged fish products, further supporting the fisheries sector in the area.
The company explained that its expansion strategy is aimed at strengthening the profitability and sustainability of the fishing industry while safeguarding the livelihoods of fishermen. As part of these efforts, repair and maintenance work on The Felivaru Cannery has already begun. MIFCO is also preparing to open a fish purchase centre in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo by the end of 2026, alongside preparations to purchase yellowfin tuna from both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
