The Government has announced plans to amend existing laws to revoke certain privileges granted to former presidents and members of parliament, in a move framed as a response to longstanding public calls for more equitable use of State funds.

In a post on social media, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu confirmed that amendments will be submitted to the People’s Majlis to revoke specific entitlements provided under current legislation. He also stated that changes will be introduced to the pension allowances for retired State employees who return to public sector jobs, ensuring fairness in the pension system.

For years, citizens have raised concerns about the financial burden of sustaining multiple benefits for former leaders and parliamentarians, arguing that State resources should be better directed towards public needs. The President noted that while such calls have been made repeatedly, no previous administration has taken the step due to its political sensitivity.

The Government has framed the decision as a matter of principle and accountability, emphasising that the changes would ease pressure on public finances and allow saved funds to be allocated towards sectors that directly benefit the people. This aligns with Article 4 of the Constitution of the Maldives, which states that all powers of the State are derived from, and remain with, the citizens.

Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has previously highlighted rising state expenditure on pensions and allowances due to discrepancies in the Civil Service Act and the Pension Law. The Government’s proposed amendments are expected to address these gaps and streamline benefits across the system.

Officials underscored that the move is part of efforts to ensure that State finances are managed responsibly, balancing respect for public service with fairness to taxpayers. By adjusting privileges that disproportionately favour former officials, the Government aims to demonstrate its commitment to transparency, equity, and public trust.
