Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced that green number plates will soon be introduced for electric vehicles (EVs).
In a post on X, the minister shared a sample license plate design, noting that under recent legal amendments, private EVs used as taxis will also be required to carry green plates, while all EVs will adopt the new plates to make them easily identifiable on the roads.
Minister Ameen said the initiative aims to promote cleaner mobility and supports President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s climate commitments announced at COP29. He described the introduction of green plates as a milestone in the country’s efforts to encourage sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions.
As part of this wider push for clean mobility, the Government is preparing to launch a new taxi line service on Eid, beginning with 150 electric cars in the first phase. The service will be operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is hiring 407 drivers, including 122 full-time recruits. MTCC confirmed the taxi line will run 24 hours a day, supported by a dedicated mobile application modelled on successful international services.
