North Machangolhi MP Ibrahim Mohamed has emphasised that while press freedom is vital in a democracy, it must not come at the expense of personal dignity, noting that even political leaders, including the President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), should be safeguarded from defamation.
Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, MP Ibrahim highlighted the significance of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Bill in ensuring responsible journalism. He said both the Government and the People’s Majlis are committed to protecting media freedom, but also stressed that accountability is necessary to prevent misuse of this right.
The MP described human dignity as a core value, observing that if a person is deprived of it, other rights may also be undermined. He added that respect should guide reporting practices, with journalists expected to avoid undue influence or the spread of false information.
Commending President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s respectful engagement with the media, MP Ibrahim contrasted the current approach with what he characterised as more strained interactions during previous administrations. He said today’s media environment is more open and journalist-friendly, while acknowledging that concerns raised by journalists over the bill would be carefully reviewed in the legislative process.
He further underscored the need to update the media framework in line with modern developments, calling for systems that enable journalism graduates to build careers in the Maldives. MP Ibrahim said a contemporary and balanced legal structure would help strengthen both accountability and professionalism in the media sector.
