Police have detained a 22-year-old motorcyclist following a serious collision on Sinamalé Bridge that left two people injured. Shunan Mohamed Shakir, from Fasmeeru in B. Eydhafushi, was arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident caused by dangerous overtaking.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:43 p.m. last Friday when Shunan’s motorcycle struck another vehicle whilst attempting an illegal overtaking manoeuvre at excessive speed on the bridge's highway. Both occupants of the second motorcycle – a Maldivian man and woman – sustained injuries in the collision.

Shunan is to be held in custody for five days to facilitate the ongoing investigation. The male victim has since been discharged after receiving medical treatment, whilst the female casualty remains under care at Hulhumalé Hospital.

The case highlights growing concerns about road safety on the Sinamalé Bridge, particularly regarding illegal overtaking and speeding incidents.
