Baa Atoll Council and Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) has announced plans to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous snorkelling event.
The event, named the Baani Event, will take place on 18 October 2025 at Villingilifaru Finolhu, a sandbank located about 10 minutes from Baa Eydhafushi. Organisers expect around 1,000 participants to take part in the record attempt.
According to the Council, the location was selected for its lagoon and surrounding reefs, which are home to a diverse range of marine species. The site also hosts large flocks of Black-naped Terns, adding to its significance as a natural habitat.
Beyond the record attempt, the organisers said the event aims to draw attention to the Maldives’ marine ecosystems and promote responsible tourism practices. They noted that the gathering is intended to highlight the role of local communities in safeguarding the environment while also showcasing Baa Atoll’s contribution to the country’s tourism industry.
Registration for participants is currently open, with the Council inviting both residents and visitors to join the event or attend as spectators. Officials said the initiative is expected to combine community engagement with international visibility, providing a platform for the Maldives to demonstrate its environmental and cultural identity.
