Maldives Customs has seized more than 1.8 million cigarettes smuggled by sea into the country through Hithadhoo Port in Addu City. The duty on the seized items is estimated at MVR 15 million, with Customs confirming that the case is under investigation. Authorities noted that higher cigarette duties have coincided with a rise in smuggling cases and illegal production reported across the Maldives this year.
