The Parliament of the Maldives has approved the appointments of Uz Ibrahim Afeef and Uza Shaufa Ibrahim to the Tax Appeal Tribunal. The decision was taken with the unanimous support of members present at the meeting.

The appointments follow President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s submission of seven nominees for the vacant positions on the tribunal. The Parliament’s Judiciary Committee interviewed the candidates and scored them, with four nominees receiving over 75 per cent marks. From this group, Uz Afeef and Uza Shaufa were selected for appointment.

Both will serve on the tribunal for the remainder of its current term, which is due to expire on 28 November. Members of Parliament raised concerns about appointing members so close to the end of the tribunal’s term, suggesting that the law should be amended to prevent appointments when only a short period remains, provided the tribunal still maintains a quorum. Under existing legislation, vacancies on the Tax Appeal Tribunal must be filled within 60 days.
