Gallaidhoo, an uninhabited island in Shaviyani Atoll, has been officially handed over to the Komandoo Island Council for local economic development.

The handover took place during a ceremony held as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of islands in the region. The island was formally transferred to the council by the Minister of Cities, Administrative and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, and accepted by Komandoo Island Council President Mohamed Sinan.

The decision follows a proposal submitted by the Komandoo Council to obtain stewardship of the island. President Dr Muizzu has emphasised his Administration’s commitment to empowering local councils by leasing uninhabited islands outside their current jurisdiction to support community-led economic initiatives.
