Rangers have been appointed to support the development of a nature park in Farukolhu, a protected area under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act.

Farukolhu’s Nature Park project, contracted to the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in 2019, will introduce facilities such as picnic areas, canoe rides, dining spaces, and a visitor centre. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the project is designed to provide both social and economic benefits while protecting the fragile ecosystem. The ministry also confirmed that consultation with local communities will guide the park’s detailed design.

The initiative is supported by the Conservation of Atoll Ecosystems through an Effectively Managed National Protected Area Estate (CATENET) project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It aims to create a sustainable financing model for conservation, while developing eco-tourism opportunities in Funadhoo.

During President Dr Muizzu's recent visit to the atoll, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim handed over uniforms to the two appointed rangers. The Ministry stated that their training will play a key role in managing the park sustainably and enhancing nature-based tourism in the region.
