Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has highlighted the vital role of farmers in sustaining the nation during difficult times, describing them as the backbone of the Maldives.
The Minister made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Fehi Dhirun Expo, held on 18 October to mark National Farmers’ Day, World Food Day, and World Animal Day.
Reflecting on history, Minister Shareef noted that during World War II, food shortages posed one of the greatest challenges for nations around the world. However, Maldivians were able to endure those hardships thanks to the country’s rich marine resources and the dedication of farmers across the islands.
He stressed that even today, farmers continue to provide the greatest reassurance to the public during difficult times, and that their contributions must be recognised and valued.
The Minister also observed that while the Maldives has undergone significant change over the years, challenges such as land scarcity persist. However, he commended farmers across the islands who continue to maintain productive farms by adopting modern technology and innovative methods.
