Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that fishermen across all atolls will now be able to obtain fuel through Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) at the same rates offered by State Trading Organization (STO).

Speaking at a press briefing held by the special cabinet committee on Middle East tensions, Minister Shiyam said the decision was made under the directives of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as part of Government efforts to support the fisheries sector amid global fuel market pressures linked to ongoing instability in the Middle East.

The minister said fishermen are expected to be the main beneficiaries of the arrangement, noting that FSM fuel sheds have now been established across all atolls to facilitate access to fuel at lower prices. According to the Minister, the nationwide network was created to ensure fuel availability at STO rates throughout the country.

He acknowledged that logistical challenges have at times caused delays in supplying fuel to some sheds. However, he said STO is continuing efforts to improve fuel delivery operations and prioritise the needs of fishermen to minimise disruptions.

The minister further stated that the Government is working to provide subsidised fuel to fishermen at lower prices, adding that the arrangement has helped many fishermen return to fishing activities. According to the ministry, around 2.5 million litres of fuel have been supplied to 1,832 vessels through FSM sheds since the Government introduced fuel subsidies for fishermen.

The Government launched its nationwide FSM fuel shed initiative on Fishermen’s Day on December 10, 2025, with the aim of expanding fuel accessibility and reducing operational costs for fishermen across the Maldives.
