The land reclamation project for the development of Faafu Nilandhoo Airport is nearing completion, with 90 per cent of reclamation works now finished, according to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
MTCC stated that 81 per cent of the sand bund wall construction has also been completed as part of the project. The company was awarded the contract for the reclamation and shore protection works for Nilandhoo Airport in March last year.
A total of 1,399,900 cubic metres of sand will be pumped for the reclamation, while additional shore protection works include the installation of 1,400 metres of geo bag revetment, along with 1,657 metres and 432 metres of rock boulder revetments.
The development and operation of the airport were handed over to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) in September 2025.
During his visit to Nilandhoo last September, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said MTCC had been instructed to reclaim additional land to accommodate an 1,800-metre runway, extending the project beyond its original plan of 1,500 metres.
President Dr Muizzu said the Nilandhoo Airport will be developed as a state-of-the-art facility capable of handling jet aircraft once completed.
