The Maafaru International Airport terminal expansion project has been awarded to Hunan No.6 Engineering Company of China under a USD 3.6 million agreement signed with Island Aviation Services. The project involves constructing a two-storey terminal building adjacent to the existing facility, adding 6,238 square feet of new space and bringing the terminal’s total area to 12,476 square feet. Scheduled for completion within 10 months, the project will enlarge the arrival hall, increase baggage-handling capacity, and introduce a spacious upper-floor lounge along with four CIP lounges on the ground level to enhance passenger comfort.
Island Aviation stated that the expansion will significantly improve services for both locals and international travellers, aligning with the Government’s master plan for Maafaru’s development. The airport, which began operations in December 2019, already features a 2,200-metre runway, VIP lounge, control tower, and fire and rescue station built under its first phase.
