Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muthalib, has stated that the Government’s newly launched “Housing for All” policy is designed foremost to support families who do not own homes and continue to rely on temporary or rental accommodation.

Speaking at the policy’s launch on Sunday evening, the minister said the initiative reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to ensuring housing security for every Maldivian family. He emphasised that the programme targets households that have long faced instability, moving from one rented space to another without the opportunity to establish a permanent home.

According to the minister, the policy seeks to provide dignified living conditions and long-term security, addressing a long-standing issue in the Malé region where high rent prices and overcrowding continue to affect thousands of families. He noted that while the policy includes options for those capable of purchasing real estate, its central focus remains on facilitating access to secure housing for low- and middle-income families.

Under the “Housing for All” programme, the Government plans to allocate 7,500 flats and 15,000 plots of land to eligible applicants, with priority given to individuals and families who do not currently own private housing. The scheme aims to reduce housing inequality and tackle concerns over transparent and fair allocation, issues that have emerged repeatedly during previous housing initiatives.
