Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has met with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) consultant Germán Cortés to discuss the finalisation of the Maldives Patent Bill.

In a post on X, Minister Saeed said the Patent Bill is an essential piece of legislation that the Government aims to enact as soon as possible, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to build an environment where Maldivian creativity and innovation are protected and fairly rewarded.

During the meeting, Cortés, speaking on behalf of WIPO, congratulated the Government on recent progress made in the IP sector. These developments include the creation of a dedicated Intellectual Property Office, the Maldives’ accession to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, and the enactment of the new Trademark Law.
