Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that more than 2,500 containers currently stranded in Sri Lanka will be transported to the Maldives next week, as efforts continue to address disruptions in shipping routes.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, minister Saeed said the delays were linked to changes in global shipping patterns amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He noted that the Maldives Ports Limited is working to ease challenges in the transport of goods and reduce pressure on supply chains.
The minister said the containers are expected to be delivered on three vessels scheduled to arrive over the coming week. He added that the move is aimed at clearing backlogs and stabilising the flow of goods into the country.
Minister Saeed also shared updates on trade trends, stating that imports have increased by approximately 19 to 20 per cent so far this year compared to previous years. He noted that the price index of staple food items rose by 1.95 per cent in March compared to the same period last year.
However, the minister said prices of fruits and vegetables have seen a decline, with vegetable prices falling by around 5 per cent and fruit prices decreasing by 15.56 per cent compared to last year.
