Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that with the Trademark Bill becoming law, a Patent Bill is also being drafted with the help of World Intellectual Property experts.

Via his official X account, the Minister said that by 2026, a brand new Intellectual Property Office will be established in the Maldives.

The Minister stated that major amendments have been made to the Copyright Act that are up to date and protect the hard work and rights of creators and artists. He added that the Maldives will now participate in the Bern Convention, describing the reforms as important work completed in a short period of time.

He said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office with a promise to establish a creative industry in the Maldives, and that today the country is seeing a happy and hopeful scene of him moving forward step by step in fulfilling that promise.

As part of efforts to draft the bill, Minister Saeed also met with World Intellectual Property Organization consultant Germán Cortés.
