The Ceylon Aaeku Dhiveheen telethon has begun in the Maldives to raise financial assistance for Sri Lanka as the country battles severe flooding and widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Organised by Public Service Media (PSM), the nationwide fundraising effort will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., with 37 media outlets taking part.
PSM said the initiative is open to all Maldivian citizens, NGOs, clubs, offices and institutions, and aims to gather urgent financial support as Sri Lanka continues to experience severe flooding, landslides and widespread displacement. Donation boxes have been set up in Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé, with QR code payment options available for easy contributions. Donations can also be made through cash, bank transfers and cheques, and a special account has been designated for the telethon proceeds.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior officials of PSM and presenters leading the telethon. Speaking at the event, Deputy Director of PSM News urged the public to participate, emphasising the importance of supporting a country with deep historic and people-to-people ties to the Maldives. Media representatives taking part in the telethon echoed the call, noting that Sri Lanka is home to a large Maldivian community and is now facing an urgent humanitarian situation.
PSM confirmed that Crowe Maldives has been appointed as the independent audit firm for the telethon to ensure transparent handling of all donations. The broadcaster said the oversight arrangement is intended to maintain public trust as contributions are collected throughout the day.
Sri Lanka remains under a state of emergency after Cyclone Ditwah caused catastrophic flooding, killing at least 159 people and affecting more than 833,000. Today’s special telethon offers a timely opportunity for the public to support ongoing relief and recovery efforts for those affected in Sri Lanka.
