Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has announced that nicotine patches and gum will be made available through Aasandha to assist individuals in their efforts to quit smoking.
Speaking at a conference hosted by the Ministry, the Minister emphasised the Government's ongoing commitment to tackling nicotine addiction. He also revealed that a budget has already been allocated to roll out nationwide cessation services, with staff training set to be completed in the coming months.
To make support more accessible, a dedicated "Quit Line" has also been introduced. Starting December 8, 2024, people can dial 1676 to access a 24-hour service offering information on nicotine addiction and personalised support for those looking to quit. The necessary technical staff have already been trained to ensure smooth operation.
This initiative is part of a broader Government strategy to reduce tobacco consumption. As part of these efforts, the import of vapes has been banned, with a full ban on the sale and use of vapes set to take effect on December 15, 2024. Additionally, the Government has increased duties on tobacco products and has approved plans to establish Tobacco Cessation Clinics nationwide.
