President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to addressing the challenges facing the fishing industry through direct consultation with fishermen, stressing that their views and participation will remain central to sector reforms.

The President made the remarks while addressing fishermen at the Fishermen’s Forum held in Raa Dhuvaafaru, where the official celebrations of this year’s Fishermen’s Day took place. He said the Government’s manifesto includes measures specifically aimed at resolving long-standing issues within the fishing industry.

President Dr Muizzu stated that his priority is to see the fishing industry developed in the true sense of the word, rather than through initiatives that cannot be sustained over time. He said the Government intends to revive and strengthen the sector based on the needs and perspectives of fishermen themselves.

The President noted that efforts to address fishermen’s concerns began from the first day of his Administration. He explained that some delays were linked to foreign financing arrangements, but said that practical work on several initiatives has now begun.

He added that some projects require significant Government expenditure and careful planning, which can take time, stressing that delays should not be interpreted as neglect of the fishing sector.

“I do not want to announce projects in name only or begin initiatives that cannot be sustained,” the President said, adding that his aim is for the fishing industry to grow in a meaningful and lasting way.

President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed that fishermen’s concerns will remain the highest priority in the Government’s efforts to develop the fishing industry.
