Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced that smart ID cards with integrated digital IDs will be issued next year.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Ihusaan said the Government is undertaking major efforts to digitalise public services across the country. He said work is underway to integrate services currently offered by individual agencies into a single digital platform.
The Minister stated that the smart ID card will be issued alongside the digital ID system beginning next year. He noted that 272,000 people aged 10 and above have already been registered under the digital ID system, representing around 80 per cent of the population.
Minister Ihusaan also said that 17 Government agencies have been integrated into the OneGov platform over the past two years, with services that were previously provided manually now available digitally through the system.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that expanding the digital economy to account for 15 per cent of the Maldives’ GDP by 2028 is a key pillar of his vision to transform the Maldives into a developed country. In line with this vision, the “Maldives 2.0” initiative has been introduced to digitalise public services.
