Sheikh Shafeeu Abdulla has praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s public engagement initiatives, stating that the President’s willingness to spend hours listening to citizens’ concerns reflects his genuine intent to address longstanding issues facing the country.

In a post shared on X, Sheikh Shafeeu said he had previously expressed confidence in President Dr Muizzu’s intentions, describing the President as someone committed to correcting negative practices and steering the Maldives in a positive direction.

Referring to the President’s ongoing community meetings in Greater Malé Region, Sheikh Shafeeu noted that the President has been personally hearing grievances from residents, documenting complaints, and taking steps to address them. He said this approach demonstrates meaningful public participation and accountability.

The religious scholar also commented on ongoing public debate surrounding freedom of expression, questioning critics who claim a lack of media freedom in the Maldives. He stated that the ability for citizens to openly voice grievances directly to the President is itself an expression of free speech, while cautioning that freedom of expression should not be misused to damage personal reputations.

In his post, Sheikh Shafeeu emphasised that freedom of speech does not extend to defamation, adding that honour and dignity must be protected. He concluded by offering prayers for the President, asking for divine guidance and success in his leadership.
