President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 83 massage parlours have been shut down since 9 December as authorities intensify enforcement actions against establishments involved in illegal activities.
Speaking to residents of Hulhumalé Phase I on Sunday night, the President described the issue of massage parlours as a major social concern affecting the wider Malé region. He said that inspections of massage parlours have been given priority following consultations with communities.
The President noted that previous enforcement efforts were limited, with authorities often issuing warnings or taking minor action without making arrests. He stressed that the current approach marks a significant shift, adding that such a level of enforcement had not been carried out before.
In addition to the closure of massage parlours, President Dr Muizzu said that 56 illegitimate businesses operated by foreigners have been shut down within the past three weeks.
He further stated that foreign nationals found to be involved in illegal activities are being arrested and that deportation procedures are currently underway.
