Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts Ibrahim Waheed has said that strengthening education and skills development among young people is essential to prepare them for a rapidly changing world.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Youth Conference, where he highlighted the central role of young people in shaping the country’s future. He said today’s youth will determine the direction of the Maldives in the years ahead, making it important to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to face emerging challenges.

Minister Waheed stressed that youth should be nurtured not only with technical skills but also with strong moral and social values, noting that character and discipline are just as important as academic achievement. He also acknowledged the contribution of young people who work long hours at an early age to support the national economy, saying the country depends on such commitment and dedication.

The Minister urged youth to make productive use of their time, emphasising that opportunities should not be postponed. He said that every day of youth is valuable and that progress tomorrow depends on the effort put in today, adding that success and failure ultimately rest in the hands of individuals.

Highlighting the Government’s focus on youth development, the Minister said greater emphasis will be placed on entrepreneurship programmes that help young people turn ideas into viable initiatives. He added that improving mental and physical wellbeing, as well as encouraging participation in sports and creative arts, will remain key components of youth policy as the country works towards greater self-sufficiency.

The Minister further noted that the current Administration recognises the value of youth and is committed to expanding opportunities within the sector. He said pathways are being created for young people to continuously pursue knowledge, describing education as the most powerful tool for national development. He added that regardless of the field they choose, young people are encouraged to apply their talents towards the progress of the country.
