The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has rejected allegations circulating on social media that a survey conducted by the commission included questions about allowing or recognising religions other than Islam in the Maldives.
In a statement, the commission clarified that none of its research projects have asked respondents whether other religions should be permitted in the country.
HRCM stated that its work is carried out strictly within the framework of Islamic Shariah, the Constitution of the Maldives, national laws, and international conventions ratified by the State. The commission emphasised that no part of its research promotes or encourages ideas contrary to Islamic principles or the constitutional provision that Islam is the State religion.
The statement further noted that rumours being spread on social media regarding the alleged survey are baseless. HRCM assured the public that its activities will continue to be conducted in line with Islamic jurisprudence, constitutional obligations, and the interests of the Maldivian people, reiterating that research undertaken by the commission does not include questions suggesting the existence or acceptance of non-Islamic religions in the country.
