Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has emphasised the importance of radio as a key institution for informing the Maldivian public, during an event marking the 63rd anniversary of the Voice of Maldives.
The Vice President attended the Baajjaveri Hendhuneh programme alongside his spouse Aishath Afreen Mohamed. He noted the long-standing role of the Voice of Maldives in providing accurate information, news, entertainment and a wide range of public interest content to communities across the country.
He also expressed appreciation for the dedication and service of the organisation’s staff and management, acknowledging their continued efforts in maintaining a reliable national broadcaster. Reflecting on his personal experiences, the Vice President recalled listening to morning programmes during his school years, highlighting the lasting impact of radio in daily life.
The Voice of Maldives was established on 29 December 1962 as Male’ Radio, following an initiative by then President Ibrahim Nasir. It was later renamed the Voice of Maldives by former President Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to mark its 36th anniversary. In 1981, the service was expanded nationwide with the installation of new transmitters. Today, the Voice of Maldives operates as a 24-hour radio station serving audiences across the Maldives.
