Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 366 applications have been received for the recruitment of drivers for the Government’s planned taxi line.
The recruitment process was open from last month until 17 December, during which applications were invited to fill 407 driver positions. Of the total applications received, 188 were for full-time positions and 178 for part-time roles.
The selected drivers will operate within the Greater Malé Region, where the Government taxi service is set to be introduced. MTCC said priority will be given to applicants already registered on the official taxi drivers’ registry maintained by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
The new taxi service will be operated using electric vehicles and will be supported by a dedicated mobile application. MTCC said the service model will draw on practices from established international taxi platforms and will operate 24 hours a day.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated that the Government’s decision to establish a taxi line service is not intended to reduce opportunities for existing drivers. He said the initiative aims to ensure taxi drivers are able to earn a sustainable income while also spending more time with their families.
