The Government of Maldives has reiterated its position in support of the One China Policy, stating that it recognises the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing China, noting that Taiwan is regarded as an integral part of China’s territory under this policy.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives has upheld this position since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in 1972, and the reaffirmation reflects the country’s continued adherence to principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in domestic affairs. The statement added that this approach aligns with the Maldives’ longstanding foreign policy framework and its practice of recognising the internal jurisdiction of sovereign states.
The Ministry also expressed concern regarding actions by external actors that it said could undermine these principles. It stated that interference in the internal affairs of states runs contrary to established international norms and the foundation of diplomatic relations.
The Government said the Maldives remains committed to strengthening cooperation with China, highlighting efforts to advance bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect, development partnership and stable diplomatic engagement.
The Ministry concluded by stating that the Maldives seeks to maintain peaceful and constructive ties with China, and will continue to support dialogue and cooperation across shared areas of interest.
