The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has announced that Aasandha coverage will be extended to prescription glasses purchased through clinics and shops nationwide, with the service scheduled to begin on 15 January.

The decision follows public concerns raised during community meetings held by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, where residents reported challenges in accessing Aasandha services in some locations. According to NSPA, the President has instructed authorities to address gaps in the system and ensure wider access to healthcare assistance.

In a statement, NSPA said the extension will allow customers to obtain financial support for prescription lenses and frames under the national health insurance scheme. The agency stated that policies and operational guidelines will be formulated with relevant authorities before the expanded coverage comes into effect.

As part of the initiative, optic shops have already been opened at IGMH and Hulhumalé Hospital, enabling eligible individuals to receive prescription glasses through Aasandha. The current Administration has also increased financial assistance for prescription glasses, raising the previous allowance from MVR 1,000 every two years to MVR 2,000 from June this year.

NSPA stated that the aim of the policy change is to improve access to essential healthcare services and respond to issues highlighted by the public regarding the availability of Aasandha benefits.
