Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has announced that approximately 170 health infrastructure projects are currently underway across the Maldives under the Ministry of Health, as part of efforts to expand medical services in the atolls.

Speaking at the ceremony held to launch new digital management systems, Minister Nazim stated that improving healthcare delivery remains a core commitment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration, noting that extensive work has been carried out over the past two years to advance health sector development.

According to the Minister, the ongoing projects include the construction of 28 new hospitals, 14 hospital upgrade projects at atoll level, 24 new health centres, and renovation works at 97 existing health facilities. He added that upgrading regional hospitals to tertiary-level status is among the highest priorities within the current programme.

Minister Nazim also noted that operational capacity is being strengthened alongside infrastructure. More than 1,700 additional staff have been recruited to the health sector in recent years, including around 1,000 new employees assigned to health centres in the atolls.

Emphasising the need for system-wide reform, the Minister said progress would rely on improvements to governance, workforce expansion and decentralised services. He credited President Dr Muizzu’s policies for enabling the shift towards wider healthcare access outside Malé.
