The Maldives Zakat House and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) have signed an agreement to strengthen the collection of Zakat al-Mal.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Islamic Centre on Wednesday. Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed signed on behalf of the Maldives Zakat House, while Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer signed on behalf of MIRA.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr Shaheem described the agreement as a historic step, noting that MIRA has played a strong role in Zakat collection in the past. He said it was important for MIRA to continue this work in a structured manner as the Zakat Act comes into force. The Minister also expressed appreciation to MIRA’s officials and staff for their cooperation in the collection of Zakat, charity, and waqf funds.
He further said that a representative from MIRA will be included in the Zakat Council during the implementation of the Zakat Act, adding that cooperation between the Ministry and MIRA is expected to strengthen further in the future.
Commissioner General Hassan Zareer said MIRA is pleased to partner in efforts to strengthen the Zakat system and expressed confidence that the collaboration would enhance public trust in the institution. He reaffirmed MIRA’s commitment to providing full cooperation and support in implementing the agreement.
The recently ratified Zakat Act establishes a comprehensive legal framework for the collection, management, and distribution of Zakat in the Maldives, with the aim of strengthening the system in accordance with Islamic principles. The Act is scheduled to come into effect on 1 January 2026.
