Marine researchers have unveiled the discovery of a new fish species in the Maldives, scientifically named Chromis abadhah.
This was identified after four specimens were collected for analysis in December 2022 by divers using advanced mixed-gas, closed-circuit rebreathers. The fish was confirmed to be a previously unknown species, unique to the Maldives. So far, Chromis abadhah has been recorded at eight locations across a 180-kilometre stretch from Faadhippolhu to Dhaalu Atoll, suggesting its wider distribution within the Maldivian Archipelago.
Chromis abadhah is a relatively small fish, measuring just 6.9 centimetres in length. Its closest known relative is Chromis woodsi, another mesophotic species found in the coastal waters of the western Indian Ocean.
This discovery is the result of extensive ichthyological surveys conducted between January 2022 and October 2023. The project, a collaboration between the California Academy of Sciences, the Maldives Marine Research Institute, and Rolex, explored depths of up to 150 metres across 21 locations in five Maldivian atolls. Several new species were uncovered during these surveys, with Chromis abadhah being the first to be formally described.
The discovery underscores the critical need for continued exploration of mesophotic ecosystems, which remain largely uncharted. Such efforts not only expand scientific knowledge but also contribute to conservation strategies for these fragile marine habitats under increasing threat from climate change and human activities.
