The Government has signed agreements to establish waste management centres in Vaavu Thinadhoo and Felidhoo, as part of wider efforts to introduce waste management systems across residential islands.

The contracts, valued at a total of MVR 3.8 million, were awarded to Wee Hour Investments Pvt Ltd. The projects are expected to be completed within 120 days.

The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at Saafu Raajje Building. Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment Ahmed Nizam signed on behalf of the Ministry, while company representatives signed on behalf of the company.

According to the Ministry, the initiative is supported through the Greater Malé Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government.

In addition to awarding the construction work, the Ministry has already provided equipment to the island councils of Thinadhoo and Felidhoo to support waste management efforts. This includes vehicles for transporting garbage, as well as waste shredders and wood chippers.
