Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that action will be taken against individuals or groups conducting business at Velana International Airport (VIA) without authorisation, after issuing a statement prohibiting unlicensed commercial activity on airport premises.

In the statement, MACL said that only businesses granted official permits under specific policies and agreements are allowed to operate at the airport. The corporation noted that this includes the sale of SIM cards and the exchange of foreign currency, both of which may only be carried out by parties licensed by MACL.

The company stated that unauthorised trading will not be permitted and confirmed that permit holders are also restricted to providing only the services they are licensed for. Services must be carried out from designated counters or approved facilities, and authorised staff are required to wear the uniform of the company they represent.

MACL highlighted that the restrictions are part of its responsibility to ensure the safety, security and regulated operation of services provided to tourists arriving in the Maldives. The company warned that those operating without permits may face action, adding that MACL will not be liable for any losses arising from unlicensed activity.
