Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that significant steps will be taken in 2026 to strengthen and modernise the Maldives’ maritime transport sector, with reforms planned in line with international standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In a message posted on X, the Minister said discussions had been held with industry professionals to review the current state of the sector and explore measures needed to enhance its future. He noted that developing the maritime industry is a key priority, and expressed confidence that progress would be achieved in the coming year with focused implementation.

According to the Minister, an advisory committee comprising technical experts will be established to provide guidance on sector reforms, industry development and regulatory improvements. The committee will support the Ministry in identifying policy requirements and addressing challenges faced by maritime operators.

Speaking at a conference earlier this year, the Minister stated that aligning the sector with IMO standards is an essential part of improving safety, operational efficiency and international compliance. He also referenced opportunities linked to global maritime cooperation frameworks, stating that decisions adopted through international maritime initiatives could deliver direct benefits to small island nations such as the Maldives.
