Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has stated that Israel’s erosion of international law sets a dangerous precedent for small states such as the Maldives, which rely on a rules-based international order to safeguard sovereignty and independence.
The Minister made the remarks while addressing the 22nd Extraordinary Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, held on Saturday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was convened to discuss Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Khaleel said Israel’s decision constitutes a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and runs counter to established international norms and principles, including the United Nations Charter.
The Foreign Minister also drew attention to the situation in the Middle East, stating that Israel’s continued disregard for international law is particularly alarming at a time when atrocities in the Palestinian territories have intensified. He strongly condemned Israel’s ongoing violations of international law, especially as the international community calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Dr Khaleel further noted that the weakening of the international legal system poses a significant threat to the security and safety of small states like the Maldives, which depend on international law and multilateral norms for protection.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is a 57-member body that has consistently advocated for Palestine and worked to address challenges facing the Muslim Ummah. Since becoming a member in 1976, the Maldives has remained actively engaged within the OIC, advocating for international law, justice and the protection of sovereign rights.
