The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that applications have opened for housing units in Baa Thulhaadhoo and Thaa Vilufushi, with submissions now being accepted through the Hiyaavehi portal.
The Ministry said the application window opened on 11 January 2026 and will remain open until 11 April 2026. The application process for the housing units in both islands was publicised last month, along with detailed eligibility criteria and the points-based allocation framework.
Under the housing policy, residents of the respective islands and long-term residents aged 18 and above are eligible to apply. Applicants must have lived in the Maldives for at least 10 years and must not own more than 600 square feet of land in their name. Points will be awarded based on family size, current living conditions and income level, with eligibility capped at a maximum monthly income of MVR 60,000.
Applicants are required to submit official documentation verifying the length of their residence on the island. Migrants and long-term residents must provide certified records confirming their period of stay. Under the revised policy, additional points will also be awarded to applicants who can't have children, subject to the submission of supporting medical records or documentation issued by a recognised health authority.
In Baa Thulhaadhoo, the Government contracted Precision Engineering Services in 2019 to construct 100 housing units at a total cost of MVR 79.6 million. Each housing unit spans approximately 1,100 square feet and includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living area, kitchen, storeroom and laundry space. Although construction has been completed, the Ministry said utility connections are currently being finalised, after which the units will be handed over to beneficiaries.
In Thaa Vilufushi, the row housing project was originally awarded to the contractor in 2011 before being transferred to another contractor following prolonged delays. Construction of the units has since been completed. The Ministry said utility services are now being connected to the development, with handover to proceed once finishing works are concluded.
Detailed application guidelines, including the scoring criteria and conditions, have been published in the Government Gazette. The Ministry said housing units in both Thulhaadhoo and Vilufushi will be handed over only after all finishing works and essential utility connections are fully completed.
