Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham has confirmed that allowances provided to persons with disabilities will not be reduced or discontinued if they gain employment.
Speaking on the Tharujamaanaa Eku podcast hosted by the President’s Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed, the minister said employment opportunities are being actively created for people with disabilities who wish to work. She noted that 356 children with disabilities have already been provided with employment through various institutions.
Minister Dr Aishath Shiham said expanding employment opportunities for persons with disabilities is a key pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and contributes to wider efforts to support youth employment. The Ministry of Social and Family Development is working closely with State-owned companies and resort operators to facilitate job placements.
Addressing public concerns, the minister clarified that disability allowances are protected under the law and will continue regardless of employment status. She also emphasised that persons with disabilities receive the same salaries as other employees, with no difference in pay.
The minister added that income earned through employment often helps families meet household expenses. She expressed hope that continued progress would strengthen support systems and lead to positive changes in public attitudes towards children with disabilities.
