The Maldives Industrial Fishing Company (MIFCO) has said that 96.7 per cent of the canned tuna production required for distribution under the Government’s Roadha Hadhiyaa programme has been completed.
Speaking to MMTV, MIFCO Senior Manager for Public Relations Shifza Musthafa said that 115,078 cases of canned tuna have been produced so far. She said the remaining 3,899 cases are currently in production and are expected to be completed by tomorrow.
Under this year’s Roadha Hadhiyaa programme, the Government has decided to distribute a total of 118,977 cases of canned tuna to households nationwide during Ramadan.
MIFCO had earlier announced that sealing of the canned tuna cases would be completed by the 15th of this month. Shifza said production experienced some delays due to increased demand in the domestic market, but assured that all remaining cases will be completed before distribution begins.
Last Ramadan, the Government distributed 111,231 cases of canned tuna under the programme. This included 50,519 cases for households in the Malé area and 60,712 cases for households across the atolls.
The Roadha Hadhiyaa initiative was first announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at an event marking the one-year anniversary of the Administration. In 2024, the programme provided each household with 10 kilograms of basmati rice and 10 kilograms of flour.
In addition to food assistance, the Government has also been providing electricity bill relief during Ramadan. The President has announced that during the upcoming Ramadan, households billed at the domestic rate will receive electricity bills capped at a maximum of MVR 400.
