The Government has amended existing taxi regulations to ease operations for taxi drivers and improve services for passengers.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said on Wednesday that the amendments were introduced to strengthen the road transport system while improving convenience for drivers and enhancing service quality for the public.

One of the key changes reduces the minimum number of vehicles and drivers required to register a taxi centre from 100 to 50. The Ministry said this amendment is intended to encourage the establishment of new taxi centres, promote competition within the market, and improve service standards.

Under the revised regulations, licensed taxi drivers will be allowed to register and operate under more than one taxi centre at the same time. The Ministry noted that this is expected to provide drivers with increased earning opportunities.

The amendments also require taxi services operated through online portals or mobile applications to obtain special permission from the Ministry to enhance passenger safety.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated that the concerns raised by taxi drivers will be addressed. In line with this, the Government is preparing to introduce a Government-operated taxi line service.

Interviews have already been conducted for individuals seeking employment under the new taxi line, which will initially operate with 100 vehicles.

Reducing congestion and easing traffic conditions remain key objectives of the Government’s road transport initiatives. Discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities, alongside measures already implemented to improve traffic flow in urban areas.
