President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said citizens are entitled to access accurate and reliable information through a responsible media sector, reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to protecting the public’s right to informed access to news within the values and standards of Maldivian society.
Delivering his Presidential Address 2026 at the opening sitting of the 20th People’s Majlis, the President underscored the role of a professional and responsible media environment in supporting national stability, public safety and informed civic participation, while also enabling effective communication on development initiatives.
Highlighting measures introduced to support the media industry, the President said the State has, for the first time, provided direct financial assistance to media organisations through the national budget. Under the initiative, funding totalling MVR 27.29 million has been disbursed to 40 media outlets to support operational sustainability and sector development.
Addressing structural challenges faced by media organisations, including high office and studio rental costs, the President said work is progressing on the establishment of a Media Village in Hulhumalé Phase I. The facility is intended to provide subsidised premises for media organisations, allowing outlets to redirect resources towards editorial development, capacity building and innovation.
The Media Village will comprise 34 units and is expected to be completed and made available for use by media organisations by mid-year. President Dr Muizzu said the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen institutional support for the media sector while promoting professionalism and public trust in news reporting.
