Former president Uz Maumoon calls for national unity

Former president Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom delivered a heartfelt speech at the Government’s official event commemorating November 3rd, expressing gratitude for the invitation extended by President Mohamed Dr Muizzu.
He commended President Dr Muizzu’s commitment to upholding the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives and conveyed his unwavering support for the president's stance. Recalling November 3, 1988, as one of the most harrowing incidents in Maldivian history, he honoured the memory of the eight armed forces members and eleven civilians who died defending the nation
Former president Uz Maumoon reflected on the unity displayed by Maldivians on that day, noting that even those critical of the government stood together to defend the nation’s sovereignty. He expressed gratitude to friendly countries and international organisations that supported the Maldives during the crisis, particularly India, whose soldiers came to the aid of the Maldives. Former president Uz Maumoon also shared his recent conversation with one of the Indian officers who assisted on November 3rd, emphasising the enduring bond between the two nations.
The former president discussed lessons drawn from the November 3rd incident, emphasising the need for unity among Maldivians, especially during challenging times. He noted that, although political dynamics in the Maldives have evolved with the formation of political parties, national unity should always take precedence over politics.
Reflecting on Maldivian history, he highlighted the country's longstanding Islamic heritage and called on Maldivians to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning Israel’s treatment of Gaza. Concluding his speech, former president Uz Maumoon offered his condolences for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Maldives, praying for the country’s prosperity, freedom, and unity under Almighty Allah's guidance.
