The Maldives Police Service has issued a warning to the public about a new scam targeting Viber users.

According to police, scammers are using a new technique to access to victims' Viber accounts and commit fraud.

In this new technique, the scammers initially contact the victim and claim that the phone number they are using was previously registered by someone else. They then ask the victim to share a One-Time Password (OTP) code, supposedly to recover the account.

If the victim refuses to share the OTP, the scammers then ask the victim to provide the number of an incoming international call they have received.

Once the victim shares the number, the scammers use it to gain control over the victim's Viber account, leading to potential fraud and misuse.

The police have noted that cases involving this method have already been reported. They have urged the public to exercise caution and avoid sharing any personal information with unknown individuals.

Victims are advised to report any suspicious activity immediately to authorities.
